Future Kings Of Spain are not Spanish and they're not in line for monarchical succession; well unless they pull a coup d'etat. No, these Dubliners are on an all too familiar path to hype-stardom thanks to the more influential sections of the music press - three chances to guess the culprits, though you'll only need one.

Their self-titled debut encompasses the term diverse, but for all the wrong reasons. First off is hardcore single A Place for Everything, before dipping into a so-so wad of Sonic Youth and Pavement helpings. Good but hardly groundbreaking.

Then the ever-irritating sound of The Thrills seems to commandeer the mid-point of the album. Maybe it's a Dublin thing. Or perhaps it's just keeping in tune with the current appetite to reprocess what was good and done before...

Frankly, there isn't much left to say. The album tails off into mediocre noise which the experts in the popular press champion as a likeness to Dinosaur Jr. So the Future Kings supported J Mascis. Did these scribes bother to read past the press release and take a listen?

While a savagely honest music fan and critic like myself may plaintively shirk the Future Kings, others will embrace them. There are always people willing to. For good or for ill. Right now I think that this band needs to go back to the studio and get an identity.
