The name of Oliver Lieb is well respected in dance music, principally for his work under the moniker of L.S.G, which has shown him to be something of a master of electronic soundscapes. This "best of" collection ought to win him more admirers - lovers of Moby would be well advised to make a foray into his body of work.

This is more than just a "best of", too. The first CD presents reworkings of his singles, blended together seamlessly. The second disc meanwhile, offers some rarities together with beefed-up club mixes of some of the singles.

Lieb's/L.S.G.'s potential appeal to the chill-out brigade is clear, but his use of fast moving treble parts over static lower range parts makes his music more than suitable for the trance floor, so to speak. A prime example is My Time Is Yours, with a shimmering sequence that Lieb turns into breaks on the first version but reinvents as a dark trancer in the second.

Transmutation, a soft-timbred instrumental like a lot of Lieb's work on the first CD, actually flaunts a tougher breaks rhythm. Blueprint is a sublime piece of down-tempo music with its distant, pulsing chords, and the subtle layers of Hearts indicate the care that has clearly gone into the production.

The second CD is as far from chill-out as you could get, up and at 'em immediately with a quality mix of Fragile, a warm and deep bass sound providing the melodic hook. Hearts is reworked with a breakdown that is suspended in space, and then the colour darkens for cuts like Transmutation 2.

At all times Lieb retains a tight control of the music, which may not appear carefully structured but sticks to rigid guidelines - in the chill-out guise, never standing still, while in the trance numbers knowing exactly when to push the riff and breakdown buttons to get clubbers hollering.

An extremely generous and well-crafted selection then, offering an impressive summary of the L.S.G. output to date. More please!
