News: Silver Jews split up

Silver Jews have split up.

Front man and songwriter Dave Berman confirmed the news on the Silver Jews forum at Drag City earlier today.

Last year in an interview with musicOMH, Berman gave notice: "After this I will stop and try to work out where I want to put my energy next and I don't know if it will be writing songs."

He went on: "For the first time I can say that I could walk away from music because this album is an answer to the problems posed by the others I've written. Plus you always want to go out on a good note and I don't want to be like Pearl Jam, taking up space where other younger bands could come through."

The band's sixth album Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea made musicOMH's Top 50 Albums of 2008 list, as voted on by our writers.

You’re right, you look old and washed up…time to move on. I’ll give my money to PJ due to their eternal quality and talent beyond their years. Enjoy your hipster lifestyle, working in a record store and munching on granola all day.

    Um. Huh?

  • Vedderman

If u are a musician and decide you no longer want to put out records that’s just fine, don’t take up space (as if space is a fixed quantity), but don’t see the need to call out a band like Pearl Jam who definately has done a lot for less known bands in their early days like Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, the Strokes, and Wolfmother to name a few.
I am just fine with the space Pearl Jam is taking up, maybe this guy is a great talent and just needs a break from the scene, but an artist really can not critisize another artists success, unlesss they are a little jealous.

All credit to David Berman for the quality of the work he has released with Silver Jews, and for choosing to distance himself from his further right than Hitler spin doctor father.
And as for all these Pearl Jam fans flooding the message boards, why oh why do you persist with your worship of a second-rate rock band who were irritating even at their best. At risk of contradicting myself, Eddie Vedder’s music for Into The Wild was tip top.

Pearl Jam, when I was 18, were fine if you’d not heard Nirvana. Inoffensive, tuneful, nice.
I suspect Mr Berman took them at random off the top of his mind. He might better have said the Stones, but I guess as an American he didn’t want to insult a British band while speaking to a British (oh okay, Camilla; Scottish) interviewer.

I don’t think you’ve ever really listened to PJ…why would a band SELL OUT in SECONDS if they weren’t still “on a good note” EVERY SHOW this past summer sold out in SECONDS…and there was no album to promote! Then, EVERY SOLO SHOW Ed did, did THE SAME! They are a band with QUALITY MUSIC, everlasting, quality music! I guess your band simply couldn’t do the same or you wouldn’t be quitting!

Sounds like this douche needed to name drop in order for anyone to pay attention to this article. Pearl Jam rocks and Silver stealing jews suck ass

It’s pretty clear to me that the Pearl Jam comment is a moot point. He was just picking a band out of the air. (Or else he does have some sort of weird Vedder grudge.)
But like Jay-Z with rapping, and recently like Joaquin Phoenix with acting, it seems like this may just be some sort of temporary stunt, consciously done or not.
Wasn’t he the core of the band, anyway? At this point, it’s sort of like someone “splitting up” their solo career.

Um. Who the hell is this guy? Show a bit of respect to a band who continues to release quality music and perform brilliantly at every show. David who?

  • Thorpe

He needn’t have worried, he never would have ‘occupied as much space’ as Pearl Jam.

I love these third rate musicians comparing themselves to Pearl Jam. Maybe with one of the worlds most faithful, cult-like fan base in todays music scene, and this no name joker decides to, out of no where disrespect maybe one of the most inspiring bands to come out since The Who. Yes i know us Pearl Jam fans get defensive and upset over these inane comments. If you, “johnny nirvana fan” (love nirvana) would just go to a concert you would understand. Silver Jews? Good career, never heard of you.

The integrity David Berman is absolutely paramount. Read why the Silver Jews split then form an intelligent conclusion. David Berman is also far more brilliant with his writing than Mr. Eddie. A band like Silver Jews would never be as large as a band like Pearl Jam because they do not produce an ignorant fan base.
