Whatever lofty claims are made about new composers who ‘do away with convention’ or ‘find an original voice’ none of them have ever been as striking as Helmut Lachenmann.
Lachenmann is one of music’s great condensers, he distils music into what he sees as its most urgent, purest elements and presents his audience with a totally fresh and ravishing sound-world.
His material, his bread and butter, is nothing so simple as ‘notes’ – Lachenmann starts with every other sound an instrument can make, from wheezes to sniffles, and from those other sounds he builds a dense web of delicate, fragile whisperings to produce the most intense music imaginable.
This generous series of concerts at the Southbank Centre is absolutely unmissable for anyone who values new music, and since Lachenmann will be performing and discussing his own work, these concerts and events are also a must for anyone who wants to witness a part of musical history.
