What is musicOMH?

musicOMH is a diverse and completely independent reviews and features publication, covering music, films and theatre. The site is based in London, UK and features the contributions of writers from there, elsewhere in the UK, France, the USA and Canada. It was founded by Michael Hubbard in 1999 and it editorially occupies a space somewhere between broadsheet culture supplements and specialist music weeklies.

Our internet presence includes pages on Twitter, Facebook, Soundcloud, Last.fm and MySpace, links to which are to be found at the bottom of this page.

Can I get involved?

We're always looking for enthusiastic music, film, opera and theatre fans who would like to write - regardless of age or location. We have reviewers throughout the UK and elsewhere in the EU, USA and Canada. From time to time we travel further afield - theatre reviews from Sydney, classical festivals from Switzerland and gig reviews from Reykjavik have been known.

We prefer experienced writers who are keen to add to their portfolios or diversify their writing, but we're also happy to consider first-timers on the merits of submitted reviews.

If you'd like to join the team, see below for what we're after.

How do I get my (music) release reviewed?

musicOMH has been around for a decade and, in that time, a startling number of PR companies, labels and agents have added us to their databases. While this is excellent, even if we somehow found a substitute for sleep, and even if we wanted to, we wouldn't be able to cover everything we're sent.

Artists: If you're an artist writing speculatively in search of a review, our advice would be: Talk to a PR company. Exploit their contacts database, work with them to schedule your campaign and target your press release(s). We hardly ever review anything from speculative emails, nor do we review online material (such as MySpace) or demo CDs.

PRs & labels: We review albums ahead of their UK release date. If your album has no prospect of a UK release date, or is not readily available to buy, it is unlikely to be reviewed. Typically most labels and agents manage to service us with promo stock (as a zip download - our preferred option - or as a physical promo) between three and six weeks (often earlier) ahead of release date. Items received at the last minute or after release date will not usually be considered for review. And telling us we can only have a stream is not going to make us love you.

To send material to us, contact us online with your enquiry, and let us know whether you wish to send a CD or a digital download share. Please do not send us MP3 attachments - these will be deleted without being listened to.

I want to write for musicOMH - how do I start?

Well, it's that little contact form again. Once you've written to tell us how marvellous you are, we'll send you an email with some pointers for what we look for (assuming you've managed to write clearly, concisely, sparkily and accurately, with example URLs of your published work). It's then up to you to follow up with some sample reviews.

We may as well say it now. We don't care who you've written for, which qualifications you have or who you know - if you can't write, proof and format to house style, we're not likely to require your services. If you can, chances are we'll want a chat. If after writing to us you've still not received a reply after three weeks, feel free to contact us again.

What do you cover?

Whatever we want to, regardless of genre, and depending on what is sent to us. Take a look through the site to get an idea of our coverage, which in music extends to everything from classical to metal and from alt.country to R&B.

We review gigs wherever they and we happen to be. Reviews have appeared from London, Christchurch, Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles, Paris, New York, Reykjavik, Lisbon, Dublin... and throughout the UK. But if you live somewhere that we don't yet cover and fancy writing a review of something you've seen, get in touch.

As the hours in any given day are finite, we do not review everything that's sent to us - which is a lot! - but if you would like us to review your latest CD, film, opera, play or gig, it can't hurt to ask.

Why don't you have a news section?

Historically because we've not had enough man hours to run one properly. We do however run preview pieces, a blog, videos and MP3 downloads sections.

How do I find articles on a particular band or artist?

Our search engine, currently powered by Google, is found on all pages.

How do I buy CDs, MP3s, DVDs, games, books...?

musicOMH, through its partner Amazon.co.uk, offers CDs, MP3s, DVDs, games, books and more. Worldwide delivery is available and orders can be placed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Find it by clicking "shop" in the top navigation bar.

You'll also find links to our ticketing and merchandise partners there. Additionally, many items will have direct links to the appropriate page, allowing you to select your item with ease.

Buying through these links helps to fund musicOMH's continued existence.

No RSS?

Yes; you can grab a feed from the blog. The rest of the site still utilises steam engines and manual labour, but we hope to have it feeding all who are hungry soon (summer 2009).
