The Noughties. How were they for you? Over before they began?
In terms of albums, it almost seems so. A decade that began with Shania Twain (remember her?) at the album chart's summit ends with Susan Boyle occupying the same spot.
With singles, Louis Walsh held sway at the beginning of the decade with Westlife; Simon Cowell ends it with Joe McElderry. Are we alone in sensing a theme here?

Of course, away from the world of reality TV, which grew into the monster that now dominates music charts in all forms, it's not been anything like that dull and predictable. No, the Noughties spelt out that it was time to get off our couches and search for albums ourselves. This we would do by the power of the internet, through word of mouth in community forums and from a burgeoning and vibrant online music media. musicOMH launched in December 1999, incidentally.
Given a blank iPod and a stack of Noughties albums, what would you save from the thousands of releases the first decade of the new millennium unveiled? We asked our writers for their picks. But we hadn't factored in that 190 albums would make the shortlist. Either that the '00s didn't have an album to define them, or the quality threshold was sufficiently high for the party to spill over at the seams. We reckon, with music never being more acessible, that it was the latter.
In order to complete this exercise in hindsight we devised a scoring system so elaborate it would cause comment at the carnevale if it were ever to make an appearance. With this we arrived at the following 21 albums for the first decade of the 21st century. If you notice a complete lack of 2009's offerings in this list, you're not alone. As with all such lists, the relative merits of disparate albums change with hindsight over time, and some of our favourites from the year just gone have scarcely been out long enough to be heard. As such, it is what it is.
