The Thrills
@ ULU, London, 12 March 2003
The Thrills first played London on the invitation of Morrissey. Less than a year later they packed London's ULU on the demand of their own growing fan base. With an orginal and fun sound, the Dublin quintet have been making the waves. It's American '60s west coast sound meets the popular East coast guitar movement - as if The Beach Boys have merged with The Strokes. I am excited to experience this unification.

Michael Jackson's Billy Jean is the background to The Thrills' stage entrance and boy, is lead singer and songwriter Conor Deasy looking the part. Sassy and extremely cool, he is the driving force behind their sound and, dressed in his black suit, he is the focus of desire for many a female in the audience.

With little banter from the man himself (except to state this is their biggest London gig to date) they bash out Santa Cruz and One Horse Town, the very simple, poppy, catchy songs which have ensured their quick rise to the top. However, they show a deeper side with tunes like Your Love is Like Las Vegas and Old friends, New Lovers.

We feel a connection with the band as they sing "Whatever happened to Corey Haim," a question all us '80s kids have surely asked once over the last few years.

The Thrills may not become the best band in the world but they are different. And from the array of songs presented tonight, their popularity can only continue to grow.
