Since Omar Souleyman last graced these shores at the tail end of 2009 he’s released a compilation album, Jazeera Nights, and refined his live show. Gone is the peculiar figure of the ‘poet’, who had whispered words into his ear during performance. He is again accompanied by Rizan Sa’id on car boot sale synths and Ali Shaker on electric saz.

This tightened-up live production, with his best known track Leh Jani in its rightful position at the end of the set, suggests Souleyman – or someone close to him – has an eye on the 56-year-old’s worldwide commercial potential. Dubby spacey psychey. 5. Geeta baublehat over mane, does a dive, 2 drummersOmar; dancer ‘stead o’ poet; leh jani encorey; clapsies as if he’s still unaware of what beats do to people. Seated electric saz player, double fingermarked korgist, dancer/waiter endearingly amateur, no cossie, as if he’s a punter at a stall in the souk getting excitable.Grand Prix season begins and end with races in Arab world; why not showcase him there? So much commercial potential and offers thereof will come his way; he must tread cautiously.
