!!! are an eight piece US collective that have further expanded the roster at Warp Records away from its bleep and base roots. Pronounced as any three repetitive sounds, common interpretations are chicchicchic, powpowpow, uhuhuh. I like to imagine it as the sound of Nile Rodgers' guitar in Chic.

Following on from the wonderfully titled Me And Giuliani Down By the Schoolyard, Take Ecstasy With Me is a cover of a Magnetic Fields song. Where The Magnetic Fields original was a twisted take on electronica and synth pop, !!! have retooled it as a baggy classic.

It bears a striking similarity to Madchester's The Paris Angels and their anthem Perfume (It's All On You) - a great record that combined the Happy Mondays prole funk with New Order's sleek Ibiza energy flash. The trippy sequenced bass, guitar stabs and grumbled vocals evoke the summer of 1990, when the UK was awash with primary colours, Joe Bloggs jeans, indie dance floor mayhem and floppy fringes. With Kasabian mining a similar seam, the baggy revival may be gathering pace. Time to search out that Watchman t-shirt then.
