Film stars with novelty rock side projects are traditionally bad news. From Keanu Reeves' notoriously awful Dogstar (Look out for that orange Keanu!) to Matrix star Jada Pinkett Smith's universally reviled Wicked Wisdom, successful crossover artists are few and far between.
Nevertheless, into the fray steps gothic hunk o'spunk Jared Leto, once touted as the next big thing after star turns in Fight Club and Requiem For A Dream. His nu-rock band 30 Seconds to Mars are, according to an excitable press release, "wildly successful", "rampant" and "anthemic" and this, their fourth single is the "longest running hit on the modern rock chart in history".
So, has Jared escaped the curse of the Hollywood rock wanabees? Er...kind of. With the soaring strings and heavy, shouty chorus of "You're killing me, killing me", Leto and friends make a fair old stab at the disaffected tween market, shoehorning just the right amount of angst into some pretty pedestrian musicianship. Is it any good? Well, it sounds like Evanescence, and if that floats your boat, then Jared may just have pulled off the trick.
