We all know the stories, but is the music any good?
From the first beat you are reminded of Dre's 2001 album, which has set the
precedent - at least on our shores - for all things gangster. Eminem may have
brainwashed the youth market but 2001 was an awesome achievement, and
although Window Shopper - and most of 50's releases to date - wouldn't get on
the album, they are not very far off.
Taken from the billion selling Get Rich Or Die Tryin'
album, I am going to take a risk here and say that he already has got rich,
and he isn't dead yet. I say this because the lyrics to this, and I suggest
you go for the explicit version, tell us how rich he is. And not only how
rich he is, but also how much richer he is than many of his contemporaries:
Ja, Nas, Jada and Joe are the window shoppers in question.
I still think that the English rappers of Skitz,
Rodney P et al could freestyle most American rappers off the stage, their
raps being so weak and irrelevant. I just can't get excited by American rappers
any more, but 50 Cent has the potential to change this. That said, there is
infinitely better stuff on our very own doorstep, I point you in this
direction instead.
