A Perfect Circle may be best known as the "other" band of the man from Tool, Maynard James Keenan, but they're really "composer and guitarist" Billy Howerdel's baby. Whatever, after listening to this, the first single from their new Thirteenth Step album, I'm not sure either of them should be fighting over who's alpha male.

Weak And Powerless seem curiously cursed by its title. Yes, there is some intricate guitar work; an off-beat rhythm courtesy of super session drummer Josh Freese; and Keenan's vocals never fail to disappoint. However, the distinctly non-rocking, moody, "alternative" air gives it the feel of an album-closer that sounds lost without the context of other songs preceding it.

Perhaps Mr Keenan should concentrate on his day job after all...
