Adzuki are annoying. That a band so young (eighteen, the lot of 'em) can produce a record so refined is sickening. Quiet Sounds... is a measured and thoroughly mature piece of work. With so many bands opting for ridiculously heavy riffing and vocals that adhere to a shouty bit/nasally sung bit, Adzuki's approach is something of a pleasant surprise.
Perfect Numbers opens the EP with a staccato guitar and tight drums that build slowly into a melodic cacophony of sound. The song ebbs and flows in an almost gentle manner; it may be heavy in places - and there are quiet sections too - but the way the song is structured means that this is not simple hardcore by numbers, but rock with brains. The vocals are loaded with genuine emotion, their sound is impressively vast, and there is plenty going on below the surface.
Feel Like Space is similarly expansive, twisting at every opportunity and displaying a knack for songwriting that most eighteen year-olds just aren't blessed with. Quiet Sounds And Simple Actions itself is a beautiful, orchestrally augmented, rambling epic that brings to mind the likes of Oceansize and The Mars Volta. It's perfect, and oh so annoying. Adzuki should go on to great things - if they can avoid beatings from jealous older musicians.
