The recent obsession with all things 1980's is not at all welcome to those who were there the first time around. There is no desire to re-live in nostalgia a decade whose main contribution to culture were seriously mismatched fashions and Thatcherite wickedness.

However, there were some great bands of the 80's, most of whom are woefully undersung, Joy Division and later bands like My Bloody Valentine being two such joys never mentioned in the ubiquitous TV ‘best of' countdowns, and it is to these and other shoegazing inspirations to whom Air Formation are indebted.

Air formation are a Brighton based 5 piece and in this single, 57 Octaves Below, their gravelly guitars and strungout synths form a wall of noise of pure pleasure. There are few vocals, which appeals, and this single simply is what it is. It is droney darkness, and more darkness, and not a lot else really. It should be listened to with eyes and curtains closed. Very loud indeed. Check them out.
