Alfie Kingston - She's Scary/A Little Nonsense (Whimiscal)
UK release date: 13 November 2006
You've got to feel a tad sorry for Alfie Kingston. He's another in a long line of earnest, slightly sensitive singer-songwriters, and you know that if he had the backing of a major record company, he'd be impossible to escape. As it is, his second release on Whimsical Records is likely to not particularly register on many people's scales.
Kingston has a decent enough voice, some nice songs and all four tracks on his EP have a polished production. If you think that sounds like it's damning with faint praise, that's exactly the problem. While all four tracks here are impossible to hate, they're also very difficult to love, or indeed show any emotion towards whatsoever. She's Scary is the pick of the bunch, a bluesey, atmospheric number, but A Little Nonsense is a bit too twee for its own good.
The EP has two 'acoustic versions' as well, although as Kingston sounds like he's being backed by a full band on both of them, I'm not quite sure where the 'acoustic' tag comes into it. Although this may be nice background listening for some, none of the songs here have any individuality or passion to stand out on their own. Still, that never did Daniel Powter any harm did it...
