Matt Hayles, funnily enough, must be cursing his luck. Look past the commercial and critical success of the past couple of years, and what do you have? In short, an artist trying his very best to live up to his first major breakthrough (that being the haunting Strange And Beautiful).
Easier To Lie meanders through sentiments of sorrow, subtly accompanied by Hayles's ever-understated piano playing. It is clearly a labour of love, and swims in profound tones and beautiful composition.
Inevitably, and sadly, Easier To Lie - while sitting at the top of the melancholy pile - was never going to touch Strange And Beautiful. With any luck you will be able to forget all about Aqualung's glorious past and enjoy this single as it was meant to be enjoyed. After all, it is "easier to lie, easier to run".
