Arthur Baker feat. Tim Wheeler - Glow

Veteran producer Arthur Baker has teamed up with his mate Tim Wheeler to venture solo for the first time. Of course, it's not just Baker who's making a solo debut: Ash fans will no doubt be curious to see what Wheeler does sans band, especially in the view of his former bandmate Charlotte Hatherley's burgeoning solo career. So, given the credentials of Baker - he's worked with everyone from Bob Dylan to Ian Brown to Sophie Ellis-Bextor - why is Glow such a serious disappointment?

It sounds at best like a mediocre remix of an Ash B-side circa 1994, and it's hardly surprising that it sounds dated given that the track has been in existence in various guises in the clubbing scene for a number of years. It's too long at eight minutes, 19 seconds and has a monotonous chorus that seriously grates after a couple of listens: "Glow, Glow-oh-oh,Glow, Glow-oh-oh-oh" is not perhaps Wheeler's finest moment or indeed Baker's.

However, the new remixes of the track, available on the CD single, offer something a little fresher. Dance music fans will be especially interested in the new Darren Emerson remix of the track, which offers a more zesty version unrecognisable from the original. It is perhaps in the clubs where this tune really belongs. I suspect that there is more to come from this collaboration, but this is a lazy introduction to what could potentially be a lot more interesting.
