While I've been adding the final edits to a previous review, Polaris, the new single by Ash, has been on constant rotation. I would like to say this is because it is completely ace and I cannot get enough of it. Alas, this is not the case.
The reason is more that I am feeling the need to check, double-check and triple-check my initial impression that Ash, a band who have previously had something to offer, seem to have turned into a dour karaoke version of Travis when we weren't paying attention. For this is true. Perhaps it's due to the song being inspired by Tim Wheeler having met Bono and tinkled its first chords on his ivories - enough to sap the life out of anything.
Perhaps it's because after three weeks of its irritating flashing light diode packaging driving me up the wall, Polaris has to bore me into submission lest I kill someone before spearing its annoying gatefold with a stiletto heel.
Either way, this is rubbish. Dull, uninspired and a very bad omen for forthcoming album Twilight Of The Innocents. Twilight of their career, more like.
