The word on the street is that this latest single by Ashlee Simpson is a stab at fellow Hollywood actress/wannabe pop star Lindsay Lohan. You see, rumour has it that Ashlee stole Lindsay's boyfriend from under her nose, but is now claiming she didn't in a song - "I didn't steal your boyfriend" runs the chorus, which means she probably did.
Machiavellian mind games aside, this shouldn't detract from what is essentially a rather good pop song. It's a hugely listenable, highly danceable bubble gum-rocker that's as catchy as a thousand torn nails. And the jangly guitar intro even recalls Riot Radio by The Dead 60's, which works surprisingly well.
Yes, it's Jessica's sister, yes, it's about as processed as Spam, and yes, she lip-synched on national TV in the States, but if you think all this will prevent Boyfriend from being one of the sounds of the summer, you're some way off the mark. I'd have some serious concerns for the people who aren't able to find this enjoyable on a pissed up dancefloor.
