I should hate this single. It represents everything that is cynical and evil and wrong with the record industry. Ashlee is the 19 year old sister of Jessica Simpson and upon discovering she could sing a bit (and finding big sis was starting to shift some units) I think the conversation in the record company office went like this:
"So we've got another Simpson?" "Yeah, but we've already covered that '40 year-old women who like to cry at movies' market with Jessica's soppy balladry." "So what should we do with Ashlee?" "Hmmmm…" (Much scratching of heads…) "I've got it! We'll dye her hair black, find her a couple of guitars and create an 'edgy pop-rock chick' a la Avril Lavigne." "Fantastic. I'm gonna buy myself another Porsche!"
Or something similar. So I should be spitting vitriolic prose in her direction but, honestly, I don't feel like it. Thankfully devoid of the pointless vocal histrionics of her sister, it's listenable, catchy and quite fun. Plus she's really pretty so it'll sell shed-loads. And I guess I quite like it. Just don't tell anyone.
