This is the second single from the critically acclaimed third album of the delightful former Goya Dress vocalist, and it’s an appealing little piece of melodic pop with nods to Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann and Tori Amos. Responsible for the main vocals, the lyrics, the piano and the acoustic guitar this is one talented lady.
Williamson’s voice is subtle yet forceful, and you can clearly note the classical training. It sits wonderfully alongside a harmonious yet jangly performance from the backing band and singers. The lyrics themselves are well-written and flow brilliantly, with no sign of the pointless drivel so common from singer-songwriters at the moment. There’s also the same enthralling sensuality in this track that permeates all of Williamson’s work.
As the record-buying public of this country seems to be in habit of rewarding mediocrity at the moment it’s unlikely this is going to be the success it deserves to be. It’s well worth a purchase, and you may well find yourself ending up with the album as well. If you do, well done!
