Atomic Kitten feat Kool & The Gang - Ladies Night (Innocent)
UK release date: 15 December 2003
This trio of minxes epitomise the sad state of affairs the music industry finds itself in - style over substance. Before this degenerates into a pitiful plea for sanity to lovers of "real" music I have to admit these girls are easy on the eye.
There isn't really too much that can be said about the song. It's an average regeneration (sic. cover) of a pretty average song in the first place. Slightly dressed up with a contemporary edge (like some of the people who'll be looking forward to their annual night out about now) the girls' voices do suit the track and there's even a token appearance from the original artists hidden somewhere towards the end of the song.
No one's going to be able to escape Ladies Night over the holiday period, which is no indication of the song's quality. It does its job and will no doubt fill dance floors with, well, middle-aged women, but come January it'll be resigned to bargain bins. If cheesy pop does it for you then enjoy it - for the rest of you, fear not, this'll all be over soon, at least for another year.
