Badly Drawn Boy - You Were Right (Twisted Nerve/XL)
UK release date: October 14 2002
Thank heavens for Damon Gough, aka Badly Drawn Boy. While so many current singer songwriters
give the craft a bad name by being implausibly dull charisma vaccuums
(Dido, David Gray...), Gough's idiosyncratic take on the art of
songwriting is a welcome diversion away from the mundane. Ever since 'The
Hour of Bewilderbeast', he's managed to consistently pull songs out of his
tea cosy hat which sound both original and familiar at the same time (ie.
classic songs).
This single is possibly the best thing he's done so far. Going all
confessional, there's a touch of Jarvis Cocker (circa Something
Changed) - John Lennon even - about the poignant lyrics. Take, for
example: "I was busy finding answers while you just got on with real life/
Always hoped you'd be my wife/ But I never found the time for the question
to arrive/ I just disguised it in a song". Only those with hearts of stone
could remain dry-eyed throughout the whole song.
A tantalizing taste of what's to come in the next album, this single is
worth getting hold of just to hear the live version recorded this year at
Glastonbury, which features a rather endearing (but ultimately failed)
attempt at whistling the refrain. Oh, and apparently this single's being
deleted after one day - don't leave it too late.
