Canterbury's Battle are, apparently, quite highly-rated. Which makes Children all the more bizarre, as not very much seems to happen in its (just over) three minutes. You keep listening, expecting something grand to happen, with a very subtle build-up, but it never comes: the song just ambles along and heads nowhere in particular.
Perhaps it is the sparse guitars, perhaps its the seemingly half-hearted vocal, perhaps its the rather basic lyric, or perhaps, ultimately, its the fact that there's just precious little to this song. It comes, it goes, it makes no impact, it just doesn't register. It's not abominable, by any means, but at best is lacking in excitement and is at worst, frankly, boring.
The guitar lines are just too intricate, too delicate and do nothing to a song that desperately needs something to beef it up. Children is also weakened by a poor vocal from Jason Bavanandan, who seems to have made it his mission to enunciate EV-ER-Y SIN-GLE LAST SYLL-A-BLE. He's just a hew-man be-ing, apparently. Nice cover, though.
