Nashville's Be Your Own PET are a group of teenagers all still in high school who caused quite a stir earlier this year at the South By Southwest festival in Texas. Rumour has it that their shows were filled with industry types brandishing chequebooks left, right and centre, all trying to cash in on a new Kings Of Leon - a band from whom they have received the mighty seal of approval.
Fire Department goes some way to justifying this hype - It's a short and sharp blast of raw, lo fi punk rock packed with the danger and unpredictability of Pete Doherty on crack, edgy guitars, a throbbing bass line and lead singer Jemima Pearl's omnipresent angst ridden squeal, which draws obvious parallels to that of Karen O.
B-sides Take That Walk and Hillmont Avenue display that they possess talent enough to write more than one good song, the latter being another incendiary cocktail of frantic guitars and Pearl's enthusiastic vocal delivery. So there's enough energy on here, at least, to power a small town, and also to suggest a rather promising future.
