In music circles it seems to be a readily accepted ideology that it is
the second album that will make or break an artists musical career.
Occasionally, the same can also be true for the second single off an album.
It would be expected, however, that, given Beck's experience, he would not be
daunted by this sink or swim type juncture.
Girl is the second single from Beck's latest album Guero, already cited
as a return to his adrenaline fuelled glory days after the deep,
introspective Sea Change. Beck's unperturbed, almost lazy voice is the
perfect antithesis to the air-tight, harsh rhythm section of a song laced
together with smatterings of synthesized electronic melodies and acoustic
guitar accompaniment.
If happy-go-lucky summer song Girl does anything, it proves that with
creative and original pop songwriting, Beck definitely swims, like a Great
White shark... but not an angry one like you see in the films. A friendly one that
only eats salad, and nuts.
