Heralding the imminent arrival of Guerolito - the Guero LP's remixed sibling - 8Bit's Ghettochip Malfunction interpretation of Hell Yes takes a brave lunge at one of Beck's best tracks of recent years.
The result? While the original Hell Yes (included as a B-side) was Guero's pixel-perfect, button-bashing, bass-licking high point, this is altogether filthier, richer and deeper; the gateaux to the original's Twinkie; the SNES to its NES (ironic, given the creator's monicker). It's like grooving to the funky music before discovering you've only had one speaker on the whole time (not to mention failing to skip through to a second B-side in the form of Green, Music And Gold's fabulous Prince-esque effort).
Featuring such rework luminaries as Octet, Air, Adrock and Boards Of Canada, Guerolito promises to be none of your standard track tweaking. Neither, as such, is Ghettochip Malfunction, its lead single. Easily one of the top tracks of 2006 so far, and more than worthy of the Beck seal of approval.
