Returning with the first single from their forthcoming seventh album, The Life Pursuit, Belle And Sebastian have pulled out a song which may be familiar to a number of the cult group's die-hard fans. Funny Little Frog, which takes its title from a quote in 1970 Brit flick, Performance, was premiered on a posthumous Peel Session back in December 2004. It was a session which also saw the band play Meat And Potatoes, a track that can also be found on the CD version of the single.
A piano-driven, up-beat number, the song has that endearing Belle And Sebastian stamp of quirkiness all over it, yet left this reviewer wanting something more. Despite this, Stuart Murdoch has once again proved what a lyrical genius he is with such wonderful lines as; "I am the jester in the ancient court, and you're the funny little frog in my throat," in a tune which tells the story of his love for an imaginary partner.
The Glaswegians returned to form in a big way with their Mercury Prize nominated 2003 release, Dear Catastophe Waitress, and will be showcasing tracks from the follow-up during a UK tour in January and February, culminating at London's Hammersmith Apollo.
