Ben Folds has long been one of the most intelligent songwriters working today and it's no exaggeration to say that Jesusland is an awe-inspiring example of his craft.
Over rolling piano chords, Folds imagines Christ returning to Earth and talking a walk round a typical 'Bible-belt' state in America. "They drop your name but never see your face...billboards quoting things you'd never say, you hang your head and pray for Jesusland" runs one lyric as Folds rails against those in power who misrepresent the true meaning of Christianity.
The song is so pretty and melodic that it's unlikely you'll notice just how good the lyrics are until after you've listened for a while. Yet it would be a shame if the message went ignored - like his previous single Landed, this is Folds at his considerable best.
