It's been a while, but it's a pleasure to hear the soothing tones of Beth
Orton back on the radio, and her fans will no doubt give her new single
Conceived a warm welcome.
It embodies all that she does so well with her distinctive flavour of
poppy, radio-friendly folk: gentle melody, thoughtful, personal lyrics,
haunting vocals. But what is slightly different about Conceived is its
positive overtone. This is Orton's most uplifting and therefore, possibly
most commercial single to date.
Orton has been associated with melancholy in the past but this latest
effort suggests that she has turned a corner both musically and mentally.
It's a much more happier Orton who inhabits these radio airwaves.
The chorus
sings: "Some of the time the future comes right round to haunt me / Some of
the the future comes round just to see / that all is as it should be / all is
there to remind me, we've got to wait and see / We've got to let it be,"
remarking that while life isn't always that great, it isn't that bad either
and things usually work out in the end. Things continue to work out for Beth
Orton musically and it's good to have her back."
