Beyoncé and Jay Z spiced up the last hot summer of 2003, and now they're back together with Déjà vu, picking up from where Crazy in Love left off. Despite Jay Z's comeback from what must have been the shortest retirement in music history, a collaboration with his other half shouldn't have been anywhere near the top of the rap icon's to-do list.
Not that the track isn't good; it's a vibrant and upbeat pop number with Beyoncé's flawless vocals powering through. Jay Z's verse is delivered impeccably and there's even a cheeky glance back at Me and My Girlfriend with a teasing opening guitar riff. It's just that there really wasn't any need for either music superstar to bother with it, because this is the same as what they combined to achieve three years ago.
At least the title hints that they're aware of the played out concept. What was successful then is bound to be successful now. I'd just have expected more from a pioneer like Jay Z despite his affections for pop princess Beyoncé.
