There's usually a rule to be followed as to whether a Beyoncé or Destiny's Child record is any good. If it's upbeat and funky, the chances are that it'll be one of the best pop singles released this year. If it's a ballad, then it follows that it'll be dull, drippy and utterly without merit.
Check On It breaks that rule by being upbeat and funky, yet also irredeemably dull. Taken from the soundtrack of the forthcoming Pink Panther film, it's insanely catchy, but also incredibly repetitive - so much so that it soon becomes irritating. It sounds like it was written more as a ringtone than an actual song - which, thinking about it, it probably was.
A rapper with the delightful name of Slim Thug pops up to tell us that "good girls gotta get down with the gangsters", but he's really no Jay Z. Very far from the glorious likes of Crazy In Love or Independent Woman, Check On It is the depressing sound of Beyoncé on autopilot.
