One part Snow Patrol, two parts Rush,
and three parts Dillinger Escape Plan, Biffy Clyro are an intriguing cocktail of music. With new album Puzzle just around the corner, Semi-mental is
the first taste of new material for an eager and clamouring fan base.
The single itself highlights the (relatively) lighter side of Biffy Clyro, with a more vocally centred feeling resounding within the song. The chorus is
straight forward, likeable and catchy, but the riff still rocks hard in a trademark, off-kilter, Biffy kind of way. There's a lot less experimental,
noisecore tomfoolery going on than in a lot of their album tracks, but the single is a good starting place for a would-be Biffy fan.
Biffy are an important band in the British rock scene. Juxtaposing a brutal, uncompromising, unexpected hardcore metal with catchy, melodic, hook-laden
pop is no small feat. And to pull it off as well as Biffy do is an incredible thing. They're no flash in the pan, here today, gone tomorrow kind of band
either. They've gone about things the old-fashioned way, building up a fan base and touring relentlessly, and now, on the cusp of their fourth studio
album, they're ready to become huge.
