With a dramatic piano opening, Biffy Clyro's new single immediately furthers the band's journey away from the glorified racket of their first three albums to the rock legend territory they touched on with last year's album Puzzle. Mountains has been receiving radio play for yonks now, and has already featured as the soundtrack for BBC's T in the Park coverage.
While it seems to be a firmly forward-thinking track, the lyrics and the slightly unexpected timing of certain parts of Mountains make sure that it is unmistakably Biffy. With a chorus that yells "I am a mountain, I am the sea, you can't take that away from me" over noisy guitar, it's an assertive and attention grabbing song.
But it's in the subtler parts that this track excels, like the oddly timed riff in the verses and the twinkling piano parts that pretty up an otherwise pretty masculine rock song.
