You always have to face up to buying embarrassing presents. Buying Hank Marvin's Into The Light album for my mother was one of the most humiliating things of all time for me. Not particularly that it was Hank Marvin, but there was a cover of Another Day In Paradise on there which increased the shame exponentially.
So a bit of advice - although unlikely, if you're looking to get something in the Hank Marvin mould for a relative but can't quite face the shame, then this single will do the job.
Tequila Mockingbird is not a cover (unlike many of Bikini Beach Band's efforts) but it certainly has that familiar Marvin twang about it. That's pretty much all you can say about it. The Bikini Beach Band has that whole surf instrumental thing down tight and Tequila Mockingbird shows that they're quite adept at writing their own tunes as well as realigning other peoples. It's fun for a couple of minutes, but that's all it is. This is no Kon Tiki or Apache by any stretch of the imagination, but it does prove that the Bikini Beach Band knows their chops.
A cover of Hey Ya on the b-side (I'm sure Bikini Beach Band wishes things like b-sides weren't merely the preserve of vinyl obsessives these days) is fun for a couple of minutes, but doesn't really set the world on fire. It is impossible to make that song sound rubbish however, so we'll let it go for now.
