Billy Corgan, aka the man who seems to model himself on Uncle Fester, is somewhat of a enigma of when it comes to making a musical contribution to the world. The grungey, angst-ridden, yet haunting melodies that the Smashing Pumpkins churned out were (and still should be) a major contribution to the development of many an emerging music lover. Meanwhile, his most recent, yet painfully short-lived project Zwan consisted of incredibly well-written songs, albeit ones that gravitated towards the cheesier side of happy than previous outings.
What's important to note is that through all of his experiments in sound (and let's face it, some worked better than others), Mr Corgan was not just writing lyrics, or writing the odd song - the bald-headed albino was writing all of the songs, all of the parts and then producing them himself.
All of which makes it particularly hard to understand how the only other person to subscribe to the Trent Reznor school of perfectionism could allow his first official solo single to be a slice of averagely tuneful electro-pop that truly sounds like a dug up B-side from the Melon Collie And Infinite Sadness sessions. Ho hum, how the mighty have fallen. Let's just hope it's a single clanger and that he redeems himself on the forthcoming album TheFutureEmbrace.
