Capitalizing on a boost from her Oscar nomination, Kathleen
'Bird' York wasted little time in scoring a major-label deal. Fans of
long standing will decry this career move while alerting everyone and
their mothers that "We liked her first!". However, whether York's
nomination will garner the mainstream attention to make her a household name
is far from certain.
Prominently featured in the Oscar winning Crash,
In the Deep is to the movie what Aimee Mann's Wise Up was to
Magnolia; a captivating track which
compels you to stay for the end credits after everyone else has left. Described as 'torch trip hop', York channels Sarah
McLachlan, Tori Amos and a sedated P.J Harvey in this sultry
track. There is nothing fancy about the melody, and the lyrics are comparatively less
inspiring than her other efforts, but York's haunting performance elevates the single from drab and unremarkable to clean and beautiful.
Whether Bird York is destined to make a
big splash, or has such aspirations, is questionable. The Oscar buzz ensures
that we will all be listening intently, at least until the next ensemble
movie track keeps us glued to our seats.
