If you're looking for sophistication, give The Black Flash a miss. Their style of rock and roll harks back to the American garage bands of the '60s and '70s that spawned the pithy, driven, iconic rock of The Ramones, by whom they're clearly influenced.

On their latest single, We Love Japan, repetitive riffs accompany the somewhat frantic vocals: "Little girl you can save the world/but how you gonna save yourself?" delivered at a screaming pitch. It's not exactly complex music, but one gets the impression it's from the heart, unfussy and thrilling by turns.

Quite how well a whole album will go down is one thing, but at just over two minutes We Love Japan is an exciting aural assault.
