After resurrecting his old band The Pixies for a lap around the festivals, lead singer Black Francis is back with a new single from his forthcoming Bluefinger album, initially being released as a download, with a physical single following in three weeks.
The single and album titles come from the drug-influenced work of Dutch artist Herman Brood who committed suicide a few years ago, but according to Black "My song Threshold Apprehension has nothing to do with the painting except that it [...] has everything to do with my impressions of Herman Brood." Glad we sorted that one out.
The lyrics can be seen as a terse snapshot of Brood's drug-addled life: "I will be the whore/and you'll be my suicide." The song is a return to old form and will doubtless please his fans, with its brutal, basic guitar and wild vocal. There's nothing new here, nothing to surprise, but it certainly does the business. If you like Pixies and his early solo work, Threshold Apprehension is going to please.
