Stick on the CD and travel back in time to a dancefloor somewhere around 1990 as this is a cover/remix (or as it happens, several) of the mid-80's hit for Thatcher-baiters The Communards. In places it features the vocals of country noir combo She Said!'s Dominique Noiret and behind it all is the Brighton-based DJ also known as Mex, giving us a taste of what's to come on the album A Hundred Days in One.
The four versions here range from the proto-trance of the slow, over-synthed opener to the reggae/ska influenced J-Star Dub Version, which sadly sounds too much like UB40 for comfort and far too dated for the new century. J-Star also provides a second remix, and to round it all off, there's a purely instrumental take at the end. In between, you'll find two versions of additional track Down & Dirty, with and without the vocal contribution of hip-hop star Micall Parknsun.
All of this would be welcome enough in a particularly average nightclub, but did we really need it committed to CD? IMHO, probably not.
