It's been five years since The Black Heart Procession last visited their particular brand of elegant, funereal music on us. Amore Del Tropico was a beautifully realised album, so it is little wonder that it has taken the band (formed from elements of Modest Mouse and Three Mile Pilot) this long to return to us.
Not Just Words is a tantalising teaser of the forthcoming album The Spell. Anyone already familiar with the band will not be disappointed. As usual Pall Jenkins' vocals are by turns sorrowful and comforting, whilst the band builds a mournful swell behind him. Piano and violin combine to tug at the heartstrings while a basic drumbeat adds a feeling of driving inevitability to proceedings. "I try and remember the things we said" cries Jenkins, piling on the agony, yet somehow making the song even more pleasurable.
The Black Heart Procession are masters of melancholy, and on this evidence it would appear that little has changed. They manage to find the light in the bleakest of places. Sorrow sounds like joy, funerals are a cause for unbridled celebration, and dogs happily hang out with cats in world of The Black Heart Procession. These are just words of course, you should explore the music of The Black Heart Procession for yourselves.
