The problem when a band receive as much hype as Black Kids have received is that far too many people just shrug and say "aah, what's the fuss all about?". You can almost smell the backlash already for the Florida five-piece, but their songs are strong enough to withstand it.
Whereas previous single I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You was a bundle of fizzy energy, Hurricane Jane is a more laid-back affair. Staccato guitar riffs and slinky, funky keyboards dominate, while Reggie Youngblood's vocals bear out the much vaunted Robert Smith comparisons. There's a coy, wistful backing vocal of "you can spend the night" before the whole thing explodes in a joyous chorus of "It's Friday night and I ain't got nobody".
The only people likely to be disappointed are the hardcore fans who originally had the demo version on the free Wizards Of Aaah EP last year - Butler seems to have strangely dulled the song's natural exuberance somehow. Everyone else is likely to fall head over heels in love with Black Kids - get ready for them to own the rest of 2008.
