Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (Mercury)
UK release date: 7 April 2008
It's the first official single release from the five-piece from Florida, and already you can anticipate the oceans of hype that they're going to have to surf. After all, it's not every band that are dubbed one of the best bands of 2008 by Rolling Stone before they've even got a record deal.
So, after a lot of very excited bloggers have been raving about them for the last 6 months or so (the phrase "The Cure meets Arcade Fire" has been much bandied about), Black Kids have signed a deal with Mercury and roped in none other than Bernard Butler to re-record one of their best loved songs. The result is a big, huge, technicolour explosion of a song with the decidedly male Reggie Youngblood catching the ear with the opening line of "you are the girl that I've been dreaming of, ever since I was a little girl".
It bounces along irresistibly and after just one listen you'll be singing along with the call-and-response chorus. Long-term fans may be disappointed that Butler seems to have smoothed out some of the rougher edges from the superior demo version, but overall this is a fine introduction to what's sure to become your new favourite band.
