The Black Neon's intriguing Arts & Crafts album has proved to be
something of a grower, with its winsome melodies and easy going charm, not
to mention a healthy dose of experimental electronic sounds.
Ralph & Barbara is an obvious choice for single, a semi-autobiographical
tale of a couple looking to move to Mexico from Germany. Ralph was in the
German army, Barbara was a model, and Steve Webster paints their portraits
in the opening verse, while the music moves in an engaging slow walk around
him. "We could leave it all behind us, Barbara - you and me", sings
Webster, over a mildly psychedelic backing.
Don't expect a big rush of sales, but with any luck this dreamy, subtly
feelgood number ought to point newcomers in the direction of the album - if
they like this they'll find the rewards are plentiful.
