The Blood Arm - Suspicious Characters (City Rockers)
UK release date: 25 September 2006
There's been a fair few festival anthems this year and it's safe to assume
that had Suspicious Characters been released back in June, then this would have
been one of them. The LA quartet are one of Franz Ferdinand's favourite bands,
and it's not hard to see why everyone's favourite oh-so-arty Scots like them so
much.
From the opening stomp, it grabs you by the balls and refuses to let go - a
swaggering chorus of "I like all the girls and all the girls like me" is backed
up by the now ubiquitous disco-rock-funk beat to create an absolutely
irresistible three minutes. The similarities to Franz are impossible to deny,
but when it's pulled off with as much self-confident chutzpah as this then its
easy to love.
It's entirely possible of course that this time next year they could be as
irritating as The Automatic are these days, but in the meantime The Blood Arm
are definite contenders for the title of Your Favourite New Band.
