Bluesky Research dress like Kings of Leon, list Crosby, Stills and Nash and Neil Young amongst their influences and sound exactly as you'd expect, for a band who name their songs True Spirit and Ask for the Dawn.
Yep, it's like the early 1970s never went away, all psychedelic swirls, overlong guitar solos and layered over-production with nary a razor in sight. They're good at it though, and with four of the band - Matt Gill (guitar), John Hicks (pianos), Sam Richards (Bass) and Charlie Waddington (guitar) - all contributing to the vocals, the words are as densely layered as the music.
Poor old James Crump only gets to 'beat drums' but never mind, he does this very well, particularly on True Spirit, where the percussion accompaniment helps to give some weight to what could otherwise be a too ballady piano. The result is an amiable three and a half minutes of prog-pop that's plugged in and precocious. With just enough of a nod to Madchester to stop it sounding too retro, it could take the lads far.
