To their enormous credit, 'surrendered' is something the Bluetones have never done, their initial success on the crest of Britpop tampered by an unreasonable critical backlash.
Thankfully that didn't quash their songwriting ability, though it has to be said this isn't up there with the best of them melodically. Surrender retains Mark Morriss' earnest songwriting, lyricalstyle and vocal delivery though, with the added poignancy of the second verse, where he sings, "I'm not a rich man, I'm all I've got/But I am positively blissful with my lot". How autobiographical that statement may be is pure speculation, but it makes for a good couplet nonetheless.
The similarly easy paced Wasn't I Right About You offers a glimpse of springtime with its nicely deployed acoustic guitar lines, while The Last Song But One, also here in Radio 2 live guise, strips back before building to its impressive coda, where Morriss proclaims that, "love is the cause, the effect and the afterthought". As ever, nicely understated - but not as memorable as their best material.
