Scotland's greatest songwriter tries on the unusual mantle of 12-bar bluesman for this ultra-short single from his latest album The Letting Go.
It features his trademark high pitched, somewhat adenoidal vocals, his voice turning squeaky as he stretches for the high notes over simple guitar strumming. "When things become too warm, make them a little wet," he advises in a light but weary tone.
Otherwise known as Will Oldham, His Highness has long been an outstanding proponent of wistful alternative ballads drawing heavily on British folk and American country traditions. Here he tries something new, and it takes a little getting used to, but grouped with a live version of that melancholy howl of a love song from Master And Everyone, The Way and a bizarre, rocking cover of The Bee Gees' Buried Treasure, first performed on Rob Da Bank's One Music show, it makes for a nice little package.
