One of the original pioneers of the UK Acid Jazz genre, the Brand New Heavies have split with their label London, recruited a new singer in 25 year old Nicole Russo and this is their first new material since the 1997 album Shelter.
With Boogie's smooth funk, it's like they've never been away. This is effortlessly slinky soulful pop, with Russo's impressive voice showcased to perfection. The lyrics see Russo warn a friend about a potential suitor who's "all about the booty" - quite so.
As one of the more respected names on the UK dance scene, they would have been welcomed back with open arms even with a below-par release. Yet this is the Heavies at their best, and Boogie bodes well for the forthcoming album.
