There's something about the term 'Flamenco Metal' that just gets your juices going. How could I pass up the chance to listen to a Gibraltan band, signed to AC/DC's Aussie home, Albert Recordings, with a fondness for boot-stamping, finger-clicking Flamenco, and a love of Moroccan beats?
It's the unlikeliness of the juxtaposition of styles that captures the imagination - either it'll be disastrous or it'll be great. Luckily for Breed 77, they err on the side of greatness. There's a lot of Queens Of The Stone Age influence on Blind, their first single from the forthcoming In My Blood album, although it's more audible on the B-side's Someone Tell Me, which has a pile-driver of a bass line.
None of the songs are short on pace, but woven in amongst Blind's soaring vocal is Flamenco guitar, which counterpoints the tune. There may be an element of novelty to my excitement over Breed 77, but if Armenian Metal can rock your world, why not Flamenco?
